💻 Artificial intelligence and machine learning are being integrated into semiconductor test and metrology, introducing new capabilities and efficiencies for chip fabrication. Sophisticated algorithms alone aren’t enough, though. Workflows must be established that accommodate varying customer needs and potential unknowns. Frank Chen contributed to this article as a Bruker expert. 📃 Read what he had to say in the full Test, Measurement & Analytics article published by Semiconductor Engineering: https://lnkd.in/dM_tWgDW #AI #ArtificalIntelligence #semiconductor

Average #roughness (Ra) is easy to measure and can be compared with historical #data, but it does nothing to describe a surface’s nuances or potential functionality. This application note explores the impacts of using 3D parameters to provide greater insight into surface finish and performance, including two case studies where the use of 3D parameters guided the design and development of high-performance surfaces. In this application note: 🔹 Figures and tables that clarify and compare different R and S parameters 🔹 Explanations of why each type of parameter is valuable 🔹 Case studies showing the advantages of using S parameters for surface evaluation and design 🔹 A collection of relevant standards addressing surface parameters 🤝 Meet the Bruker team that shared their expertise in this application note: Roger Posusta, Sandra Bergmann, Erica Erickson, PhD #surfacemeasurement #materialscience

⚾ 🏏 Grip is enormously important for #baseball pitchers and #cricket bowlers. Significant grip-enhancing changes to the ball are illegal in both sports. Let’s took a closer look at one of these potential grip enhancements: scuffing. We put a new Rawlings baseball in our NPFLEX-1000 optical profiler with a long working distance to analyze a pristine surface (just the leather—the seams are a whole other ball game!) Then we scuffed it up by throwing it around on a dry dirt surface before repeating the measurement. 📈 Though average roughness didn’t change much beyond the spuriously large defects, one surface parameter that changed a lot was kurtosis, which basically measures how spiky a surface is. The new baseball had a lower kurtosis value (equal to 3). The scuffed ball had a kurtosis double that of the new ball (around 6). ❓ This got us wondering: for pitchers/bowlers, what surface parameter change do you think would be the most grip-enhancing? #MLB #materialsscience #microscopy #pitching
